A friendly guide to manscaping: the right tools, safe technique and easy aftercare for a smooth, comfortable finish.

There's something quietly generous about showing up well groomed. Plenty of men want to tidy up down there but aren't sure where to start, and the internet is full of horror stories. Let's take the nerves out of it. There's no single correct look.

Some go completely smooth, others keep things short and neat, and both are great. What matters is that you feel good and skip the small mistakes that turn a relaxed grooming session into an unplanned first aid moment.

Start With a Trim, Not a Blade

Long hair clogs blades and tugs at the skin, so shorten everything first with a beard or body trimmer. On the scrotum, use small sharp scissors instead: the skin there is thin and loose, and electric clippers can catch it. Once everything's short and even, you can decide whether to go further. A clean trim is already a good result.

Position and Timing

Comfort and visibility do most of the work. Lying back on a towel keeps your hands free, and sitting on the edge of the bath or the toilet brings everything within reach. The shower has its own advantage, since warm water softens the hair and lets you rinse the blade as you go.

And don't do this five minutes before a date. Give yourself twenty minutes, or better still, groom the day before so any redness has time to settle.

Lather Up

Wet the area with warm water, then apply a generous layer of shaving cream or gel. Skip anything with menthol or heavy fragrance, because sensitive skin will let you know about it. A good gel lets the blade glide and shows you where you've already been.

The Technique That Works

Use a fresh blade, short light strokes, and no pressure at all. Keep the skin taut with your free hand, and rinse the blade every stroke or two.

- Shaft: hold the penis gently to one side, shave, then switch sides.

- Between penis and scrotum: hold the penis upright and move the blade downwards.

- Scrotum: stretch the skin flat and shave from the middle outwards, one small section at a time.

Shaving against the grain gives the smoothest finish, but only once the hair is short and only if your skin tolerates it. When you're happy, rinse with cool water and pat dry.

The Hard Work

Freshly shaved skin needs something soothing: an unscented antiseptic cream, body powder, a light oil, or a fragrance free moisturiser. Exfoliate gently a day or two later to keep hairs from growing back into the skin. If redness or ingrowns persist, give the razor a week off.

Aftercare

Freshly shaved skin needs something soothing: an unscented antiseptic cream, body powder, a light oil, or a fragrance free moisturiser. Exfoliate gently a day or two later to keep hairs from growing back into the skin. If redness or ingrowns persist, give the razor a week off.

Four Things to Avoid

  1. Chemical depilatories. Not formulated for genital skin, and burns are a real risk.
  2. Leaving evidence. Rinse the sink, tub and floor. Whoever shares your bathroom will thank you.
  3. Getting creative. Save the shapes and designs for someone who's asked. Simple looks confident.
  4. Using her razor. Get your own gear and keep it separate.

Grooming Is a Conversation

Grooming is a personal choice, not a requirement, and nobody owes anyone a particular look. Some partners love smooth, others prefer natural, and the only way to know is to ask. That easy honesty about bodies and preferences is the same muscle that makes everything else in the lifestyle work well.

So do it for yourself first, because turning up feeling confident is one of the sexiest things you can bring to a room.
